Airborne Applications

High resolution and high speed, combined with low weight and power consumption, make NEO’s HySpex cameras very well suited for airborne data acquisition.

Position- and attitude logging systems (IMU/GPS) from leading manufacturers can be integrated and supplied with the cameras. Alternatively, the HySpex systems can be interfaced with the customer’s existing navigational hardware.

For airborne systems, NEO supplies dedicated software and a touch screen for ease of operation. A high performance rack computer is standard, but customized light-weight computers are available for smaller aircrafts, UAV's etc.

Using NEO’s VNIR-1600 in an airborne application recording the terrain from 1500 m altitude, the resulting on-ground pixel footprint is 27 cm x 54 cm and across track FOV is 450 m. At this altitude and at maximum frame rate (135 Hz) and resolution, the ground can be scanned with a speed of 263 km/h (142 knots). Under these conditions, it is possible to cover 2 km2/min yielding 4 Gbyte of data pr. minute.

The weight of a HySpex camera plus IMU/GPS for an aerial application is less than 7.5 kg.

NEO's airborne HySpex systems have been in operation since 2003

Examples of applications utilizing airborne hyperspectral imaging systems:

  • Defense and security: Military target detection/-identification, surveillance, search and rescue.
  • Forestry: Forest mapping/classification, forest health monitoring
  • Agriculture: Precision farming, growth monitoring, yield prediction, governmental monitoring
  • Geology: Mineral mapping, environmental impact around mine areas
  • Environmental monitoring: Algae blooming, oil spill detection, land and sea monitoring, glaciology
  • Government: Land use monitoring, urban planning/-management

The HySpex cameras were from the beginning built for airborne applications. Dedicated software, for controlling up to three cameras in parallel, is delivered with the cameras.
